Lucas Landscape Maintenance

Soft Landscaping and Lawn Establishment

New ground that actually takes.

New lawns from turf or seed, planting and borders, on soil that has been prepared properly first.

Freshly laid turf striped across a large, gently sloping garden, with a house at the far end and a hose across the lawn

What we do

Turf fails on preparation, not on turf.

Laying good turf onto compacted builder's subsoil wastes the turf. We rotovate, clear, level and feed the ground first, then lay.

Planting is the same. Beds get dug over and improved before anything goes in, and we pick species for the aspect and the soil rather than the picture.

What is covered

Soft works we take on.

New lawns and planting, from bare ground or from a cleared site.

Turfing

New lawns laid onto prepared ground.

Cut to shape around beds and paths.

Seeding

Larger areas and repairs.

Cheaper than turf where time allows.

Ground preparation

Rotovating, clearing and levelling.

The part that decides whether it takes.

Topsoil and improvement

Imported topsoil and conditioner.

Depth to suit what is being grown.

Beds and borders

Cut, edged and dug over.

Planted to aspect and soil.

Planting schemes

Shrubs, perennials and structure.

Chosen for how they will look in five years.

Hedging

New hedge runs, bare root and potted.

Planted in season.

Mulching

Bark and compost to beds.

Holds moisture and slows weeds.

Real transformations

Before and after a new lawn.

Bare, rutted ground along a new building, then lawn, path and gate along the same wall. Drag the handle to compare.

Common questions

Questions we get about new lawns and planting.

When is the best time to turf?

Autumn and spring are easiest because the ground is warm and damp. Summer turf works but needs watering, and we will say so before laying it.

Turf or seed?

Turf gives you a lawn immediately and suits smaller areas. Seed is cheaper over large areas but needs months and protection from traffic.

How much watering does new turf need?

A lot, daily, for the first few weeks in dry weather. It is the single most common reason new turf fails, so we go through it before we leave site.

Do you take existing planting out?

Yes, clearance and disposal are quoted with the work. Anything worth keeping we will say so rather than skip it.

How quickly will I hear back?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. A site visit is usually within the same week. We look at the property before quoting anything.
